This week, I was particularly intrigued when watching Black Mirror. It is a TV show I have heard about for a long time and have been recommended, so I was very excited to watch it as a part of our homework. Despite the fictitious nature of this episode, the idea of one’s behavior being recorded is very much a part of our daily lives. Through applications like TikTok, algorithms can track our interests and tendencies and shape our future behavior. Additionally, the “grain” shown in the episode displays how surveillance methods can alter simple interactions between people and how they can blur the lines of morality. Specifically, I am thinking about how Liam intruded on the privacy of both Fi and Jonas. He wanted to discover the truth about their relationship, but his forceful intrusion into their memories was not warranted despite their apparent wrongdoings. Even knowing this, how the episode posed his dilemma made me unsure how to feel about his actions. I wanted him to seek justice and give himself and the audience closure… but at what cost? This is what I mean by how the lines of morality can be blurred because there are tradeoffs in situations like these. Potentially, he never finds out that his baby may not be his and that his wife is cheating on him if he doesn’t intrude on her privacy. In this scenario, though seeking the truth through various methods may seem desirable, when this line of thinking is applied to other situations, the “right” action becomes murky.
