Reflection on the Semester

Reflecting on the past semester, I am grateful that I could be in this seminar and formally pursue my interest in the evolution of privacy and surveillance. When applying to the class, I believed it would be more technologically oriented; however, I am glad to have explored the intricacies of the philosophy behind privacy and the origins and broader techniques used for population control. In particular, I most enjoyed learning about the panopticon and examining its implementation's desired and realistic effects. I even talked about it during my meeting with my economics section leader. When we were talking about the software Panopto, I told him about its namesake. What I have learned from this class, both in and out of the classroom, has also established itself beyond conversations and into how I think about the differences between the public and private realms and how I navigate the boundaries between them, preserving my individuality. Though I have aimed to protect my online privacy for some time now, I further understand the importance of doing so digitally and in tangible reality.
