During my solitary walk through Harvard Yard and the square, I could experience my new home in a manner I had not done before. Though I usually walk without looking like a zombie staring at my phone, I often have headphones that alter my surroundings’ experience. When I don’t wear them, I walk to get somewhere rather than simply appreciating the space I am in. Due to the intentions behind my solitary walk, I am reminded of my tour of Harvard. Over a year ago, I can recall strolling through Cambridge, analyzing the architecture and spaces, thinking about and hoping that this would be a place I could call home. On my recent walk, I got to do something similar, but from a different point in my life. As I walked, I examined the people, the street signs, the stores, and all the little details of the buildings. It was very refreshing to give my brain an up-to-date mapping of everything around me as, generally, the cloud that technology and my priorities bring over my life makes me less open to absorbing the collectively meaningful stimuli that make up Cambridge and Harvard. After getting in touch with this environment, I intend to do solitary walks more often.
